Summer is awesome. Long, sunny days spent languishing poolside, waking up to the jubilant symphony of birdsong, streets, and parks filled with bodies squeezing the very last bit of syrupy sunlight from the day.

What Could Be Better – How About Being Able To Stay Cool?

Less awesome are sweat-stained shirts, headaches and dozing off during important meetings, which is why it’s important to keep your air conditioning in working order. As with any electromechanical system, air conditioners require routine maintenance to prevent wear and tear and ensure that everything is as it should be.

This may sound intimidating – especially if you’re not technically-minded – but there are actually checks that you could do yourself, and that could save you money in the long term.

Here are some easy checks that you can perform on your air conditioning system.

The blower belt

Air conditioning systems – the majority of them, anyway – work with a system of belts and pulleys which help to control the airflow. Problems in this area (for example slackness, wear, etc.) can cause low airflow, especially if ice crystals have been allowed to form.

If you don’t feel comfortable checking the belt yourself, remember that we do air conditioning maintenance Celina, TX. We can help!

Refrigerant

The refrigerant is a critical part of any air conditioning system. Basically, it’s a liquid, or sometimes a gas, that undergoes a bunch of chemical changes which we won’t go into here, and absorbs heat from outside and turns it into cool air. If the refrigerant is low, you’ll find that the air expelled from the air conditioning system is not as cool as it should be.

The condenser coil

Dust, insects and other debris from the environment get stuck in the condenser coil over time and could lead to problems if left unchecked. You can clean the condenser coil with a garden hose – just be sure to switch off the air conditioning first!

The filter

An air conditioner’s filter does exactly what its name suggests: it filters out dust and other impurities that you really don’t want to be breathing in. Remember that an air conditioning system sucks in warm air from outside, processes it and expels lovely cool air.

Noble enough, but the air outside is full of unsavory stuff that the filter catches before it has a chance to escape. For this reason, you should take care to ensure that the filter isn’t allowed to get clogged up.

Clean it every month or so, and don’t be afraid to take a vacuum cleaner to it! Oh, and a blocked or poorly-maintained filter will also adversely affect your air conditioning’s efficiency, giving you a nasty surprise when the electricity bill comes!

The evaporator coil

This is one of the most critical parts of an air conditioner system, and an evaporator coil that has become soiled won’t be able to absorb heat very efficiently. While the filters should stop most dirt from reaching the coil, there will always be the odd speck of dust that escapes and over time this could cause problems.
